Welcome to Food Swap Friday! I’ll be showing you how to swap out your favorite, not so good for you foods, for better, healthier alternatives that your whole family will love.

Whether you’re an “anything goes” type of eater, or you have one or more food allergies/sensitivities, or you’re totally into a grain free, Paleo-like lifestyle, I’ve got you covered.

Here’s our first food swap: Let’s talk tortilla chips!

What family doesn’t have this crunchy snack in its cupboards? It wasn’t long ago that I was eating regular Tostitos, and sometimes even Fritos. That was until I realized they had a dirty little secret: they’re loaded with pesticide laden, GMO corn!

Now I choose to make every effort not to eat anything that contains genetically modified organisms. Why? Because GMOs haven’t been proven safe for our people OR our planet. The herbicide that they have been engineered to withstand heavy sprayings of, glyphosate, was recently labeled a probable cancer causing agent by the World Health Organization! So, the first step in cleaning up any diet is to Say NO to GMOs.

Here are 3 Ways to Swap out the junky tortilla chips and give your family a healthier alternative:

For the Anything Goes Eater:

Way Better Multigrain OR Simply Sweet Potato Tortilla Chips (a few varieties)

These are Non GMO Project verified, with the added plus of being Certified Gluten Free as well. They also contain sprouted grains and seeds, which are healthier than the usual “unsprouted” kind!corndippers2

If you’re more a fan of Fritos chips, then a great alternative for you is Trader Joe’s Organic Corn Chip Dippers. They have all of the taste, but none of the GMO corn, as they are USDA organic.

Yes, both of these unfortunately contain vegetable oil (too heavy on omega 6 fat, and not suitable for heating at high temps), but I’ve yet to find a corn chip that doesn’t! If you know of brand that doesn’t have it, please let me know. To avoid it, pop some popcorn in coconut oil, instead of buying chips, pour some butter over it (yes, I said butter), and enjoy! Homemade is more fun anyway, and I’ll have more options for you in a minute. In the meantime…

For the Food Sensitive Eater:

Late July Organic Sea Salt Tortilla Chips


These are Non GMO Verified AND USDA organic, which is pretty much as pure as you can get. PLUS, they are not only Certified Gluten Free, but Certified Peanut and Tree Nut Free as well! You don’t usually find this many certifications on one product, especially the latter two. So, unless you are sensitive to corn, eat up!

And last, but certainly not least, for the Grain Free, Paleo-Like Eater:

Artisan Tropic Plantain Chips


If you don’t eat corn, due to an allergy or living a grain free lifestyle, you’re in for a treat! I was so excited to find these, as I had given up corn chips completely. They are absolutely delicious, are Paleo Certified, non GMO, vegan, and contain only 3 ingredients!

Best part is, they are made with palm oil, which is a much healthier cooking oil than any type of vegetable oil ever will be. Vegetable oils (like safflower, sunflower, and corn oils), as I mentioned previously, are also very high in omega 6 fats, which most of us get way too much of, if we eat a lot of processed foods. And canola oil is genetically modified, so it’s best to avoid that whenever possible, as well.

Making healthy food choices doesn’t have to be time consuming or complicated. While there IS a ton of conflicting information and junk out there, there are also a lot of grEAT alternatives, if you know what to look for.

You don’t have to turn your kitchen sink upside down in order to start making informed choices, right here and right now. It’s actually much easier to reverse old , self-sabotaging habits and create all new ones, when you swap items out one at a time. When you do so in your own way, and at your own pace, the changes are much more likely to stick!
